Normal weight Jack Russell Terrier. Jack Russell Terrier

Recently, it has been firmly occupying the position of the best breed of dog for burial hunting. This is not only a brave friend and smart companion, but also an excellent employee who fully justifies his capabilities and the hopes of those who once created this wonderful breed.

This variety of terriers instantly gained popularity in all corners of the globe. But due to the growing interest in the breed, there was also some confusion in the Jack Russell Terrier standard. Most of all, representatives of cynological clubs in Australia and America got confused in this matter. Here Russell was called by completely different names, despite the fact that they were absolutely similar to the assigned and approved breed standards. In the end, it was decided to approve the uniform world standard of Jack Russell Terrier breed, which all terrier breeders adhere to today.

The character and temperament of the dog

Of no small importance in the working capacity of the dog is its character. Jack Russell Terriers have an unusually lively disposition. These are real actors in life and excellent companions for any company. The look of these dogs is distinguished by intelligence and quick wit. They are brave and fearless. But at the same time, they are very friendly and trusting. Terriers of this type acutely feel the mood of a person, as well as the nature of those who come to the owner's house. And if the guest is disposed to confidential communication and is truly a worthy person, then Jack Russell Terrier will become for him an excellent conversationalist and a tireless companion in various actions. This dog loves to learn training skills. She is so playful that she cannot sit still for several minutes. But because Jack Russell Terrier is suitable only for people who are athletic and temperamental, cheerful and loving long walks in nature, without which it is simply impossible to imagine the existence of terriers.

Color and proportions

First of all, dog handlers pay attention to the appearance of the dog. Terriers of this type must be active, flexible, strong and have instant reactions that are characteristic only of Russell. The hair of this breed of dogs can have several varieties from a rather coarse, hardcoat to an intermediate mixed or smooth type. As for the color, in this case white color prevails with varieties of red, chestnut and even black spots on the head and at the base of the tail of the dog.

Weight and dimensions

The ideal weight of the Jack Russell Terrier should not exceed 6-7 kg. The minimum weight for terriers of this variety should not be less than 5 kg. The height of the dog varies from 25 to 30 cm. At first glance at the Jack Russell Terrier breed, you may get the misleading impression that the dog is somewhat disproportionate and slightly stretched in length, which varies somewhat with its height. But such dimensions were created meaningfully and intentionally precisely so that Jack Russell could perfectly vary his body at the time of hunting and professionally cope with his duties as a normal dog.

Head and body of a dog

First of all, pay attention to the dog's nose. Even with a puppy, it should always be only black, with no exceptions in this case. Russell's eyes are alert, not distracted. The eyes are small, dark, almond-shaped, but by no means convex. The head should be slightly elongated and wedge-shaped. Thus, the skull gradually narrows to the eyes and jaws, so that the transition from the forehead to the muzzle is determined clearly, but not too expressively. Cynologists have a lot of controversy over the standard of the ears of this breed. But all the breeders agreed that Russell's ears should not be in a standing or semi-standing state. Ears can only be hanging and have a fold at the level of the skull. In addition, the ears must hang down forward and fit snugly to the head, and their tips should not be placed in the direction of the eyes, but only downward.

Jaws

An amazing phenomenon in the standard Jack Russell Terrier breed is the jaw of a dog. With all the pretty appearance and relatively small stature, Russell has very powerful, wide and deep jaws. The teeth are also strong, scissor bite.

Chest and neck

An important role in the development of a dog’s skeleton is played by Russell’s neck. It is strong, one might even say powerful, without flaws and vices. The chest is wide and deep, and the sternum itself should be clearly visible in front of the shoulder.

Tail

The tail may hang down at rest. But at the time of work and just movement, it must be in an upright state, regardless of whether it is docked or not.

General description of the breed, character

You are probably already familiar with this charming smiling dog. He brilliantly played himself (and who else!) In the film "The Mask", as well as in several other films.

Jack Russell Terrier is a relatively young breed. She was bred in the UK about 200 years ago. What is the secret of the growing popularity of Jack Russell Terriers? It is extremely difficult to explain in words - in this dog there is neither the grace of the Doberman, nor the persuasiveness of the mastiff, nor the decorativeness of indoor breeds. Speaking directly, Jack Russell Terrier has gathered all the funniest dog features and looks very peculiar - short stature, short curved legs, protruding eyebrows and incredibly mischievous, slightly cunning eyes. There is some unpretentious charm of the peasant in this terrier, and this is no accident.

The fact is that the creator of this breed of dogs, pastor John (Jack) Russell (1795-1883), set for her purely pragmatic tasks. He wanted to create the perfect fox hunter and other small animals, so he paid most attention to qualities such as hunting excitement, fearlessness and the ability to easily penetrate burrows. Therefore, the growth of Jack Russell Terrier is small - from 25 to 30 centimeters. In general, this breed is a bit like a fox terrier - a dog with similar hunting functions. To enhance hunting qualities, John Russell mixed the blood of fighting dogs, for example, a bull and terrier, to terriers.

The breeder did not pay the slightest attention to the exterior of the dog. Therefore, we can say that the appearance of Jack Russell Terrier was formed on the principle of "how God puts a soul." And thanks to this element of spontaneity, we got one of the most charismatic and charming dogs in the world. Gay, liveliness, agility and rare quick wit Jack Russell Terrier - these are exactly the virtues for which we love him. This dog has completely no aggression towards people, it is great for a family with a child who will be happy to keep company in active games.

Have you ever seen Jack Russell Terrier puppies? I wonder how these graceful porcelain figurines with touching meek little faces make energetic, lively and bold adult dogs.

Species, Standards, and Varieties

Outwardly, Jack Russell Terrier is a small, strong and flexible dog of rectangular format with a deep chest and a strong neck. Dogs of this breed have a flat, moderately wide skull, tapering to the jaws; the transition from the forehead to the muzzle is noticeable, but not too pronounced. Jack Russell's eyes are small terriers (not bulging at all), dark in color, with an attentive expression. The edges of the eyelids and nose are pigmented in black. Ears of small size, raised on the cartilage, with their tips down, which tightly close the ear canal, are considered ideal. Tail docking - at the request of the owner.

Puppy selection

So, you sleep and see yourself as the happy owner of the Jack Russell Terrier, and the imagination draws scenes of joint games and walks. However, before you decide to know all the joys of motherhood, consult with your family and think hard about whether you can provide your puppy with sufficient attention. As already mentioned, Jack Russell Terrier - the owner of a restless temperament, which must be compensated by sports and a long walk.

You should choose a puppy in a specialized nursery - to a certain extent, this will guarantee you the absence of unpleasant surprises with your health and exterior. Please note that if you want to take part in exhibitions, then you need a dog with the RKF metric. Dogs with the SCOR metric cannot participate in RKF shows.
Study the pedigree of the future pet, get acquainted with mom and, if possible, with dad. Pay attention to the conditions in which the puppy grows. Places of detention should be neat, clean and spacious enough for puppy games. The floor of the room in which the babies are kept should be non-slip so as not to expose them to injuries.
Of course, the choice of a puppy is, first of all, the choice of a heart, however, when acquiring a thoroughbred dog, listening to the voice of reason is useful and even necessary.
Particular attention should be paid to the nature of the puppy. Jack Russell Terrier must show no cowardice, no aggression, no apathy. Typical character traits of this breed are activity, cheerfulness and curiosity.

Next, you should examine the puppy for its physical health. A healthy dog should have a wet and shiny nose (without any secretions), a clean booty, elastic, soft stomach and normal stool. It makes sense to probe the tail of the dog along its entire length (there should not be excesses on it), and also check the ribs for the absence of tubercles. Be sure to look at the bite and make sure all teeth are in place (age appropriate).

Features of the content, care, health

Jack Russell Terrier is not fastidious in food, does not require special hair care, is very neat and, importantly, does not have the characteristic smell of “dog”. However, one should not think that this is a dog for the lazy. Remember that Jack Russell Terrier is a working breed, besides it is very temperamental and funny, therefore it constantly needs movement and fresh air. Jack Russell Terrier loves to run, jump, dig holes, play sports, but out of boredom may well begin to spoil things.
When feeding Jack Russell Terrier, it is important to consider that this dog has a tendency to be overweight, so its diet and diet should be taken under strict control. Feed the dog should be no more than twice a day - morning and evening.
In terms of grooming, Jack Russell Terrier is the perfect pet. It is enough to clean it once a week with a stiff brush. Despite the “impractical” color, the coat of these dogs has the ability to self-clean. Jack Russell Terrier should be washed only with really serious contamination. Also, the bitches should be washed after the heat.
Ears and teeth require some attention Jack Russell Terrier - they should be inspected and cleaned regularly (ears with a cotton swab, and teeth with a “dog” toothbrush).

Features mating Jack Russell Terrier

Many dog owners believe that having puppies is a profitable and easy business. Forced to upset them - this is hard and exhausting work, in addition, requiring certain financial investments.

Breeding Jack Russell Terriers makes sense if you are the owner of a purebred dog that shows good results at shows. This means that her offspring can significantly improve the breed. To find a couple, it is best to contact a specialized nursery or club where professional breeders will talk about the peculiarities of this breed and help you choose the best candidate for the role of father or mother of your unborn children.

Parenting and training

Considering that Jack Russell Terrier by its nature has a very peculiar temperament and bright personality, education and training are of great importance for this breed. It is important to periodically (and in case of difficult situations) consult with a professional trainer. You need to educate Jack Russell Terrier from the first minutes of his appearance in your house.

Immediately take the puppy's own place and gradually accustom him to it. Be sure to acquire dog toys so that the puppy deals with them, and not your furniture and shoes. You should not play with Jack Russell Terrier with your hands - the habit will remain, and the teeth will become larger and sharper with age. The slightest attempt to bite the owner’s hand (even if the baby’s gums itch), stop on the vine.
Often puppies are treated with some indulgence - like children. They are really children, but it is important to understand that bad habits of children will remain with the dog for life, and you will suffer from them. Therefore, do not let little Jack Russell Terrier do what you don’t want to put up with in an adult dog: growl, bite while eating, protect certain places at home from the owners and in every way dominate any member of the family.

Nurseries and clubs

Jack Russell Terriers appeared in Russia and the CIS countries relatively recently (in 1999), and now the popularity of this breed is only gaining momentum. In 2003, the Russian Canine Federation registered the National Russell Terrier Breed Club, designed to bring together Jack Russell Terriers and Parson Jack Russell Terriers. Currently, most of the nurseries that breed Jack Russell Terriers are concentrated in Moscow and St. Petersburg. There are nurseries in Belarus and Ukraine.
