Breed history

It is difficult for the modern owners of miniature Dobermans to believe that the English toy terrier once chased small rodents along the burrows and killed swarms of rats. However, in Old England, the breed Manchester Terrier was bred specifically for hunting burrow animals. Then the dog turned into a hunter for rats, which unrestrainedly bred and spread infectious diseases. Progress in medicine and the chemical industry made it possible to abandon the use of that terrier for similar purposes, and breeders were engaged in fixing in the litters of small stature and refined structure.

A selection of litters of small-sized puppies made it possible to isolate a separate branch in the varieties of Manchester Terrier, which led to the emergence of the English Toy Terrier. In 1962, the breed left growth varieties of Manchester Terriers and received a residence permit in the English Kennel Club as an independent unit of the canine world. Having passed a difficult selection path, the English toy terrier became a dog saloon. Unfortunately, today his popularity is declining, and the British are sounding the alarm over the reduction in the number of purebred English toy terriers.

In Russia, the breed has undergone major changes. Through the efforts of dog handlers Zharova and Landau, the little Englishman departed from generally accepted standards. His Russian version was born - .

Breed history

A few centuries ago, British breeders bred to hunt medium-sized animals, such as burrows, a new breed of dog - Manchester Terriers. In addition to hunting, Manchester Terriers were engaged in catching rats, especially during plague epidemics. Dexterous businessmen decided to use these dogs for organizing bloody entertainment - rat battles, which were very popular with certain publics. After some time, the British government legally banned rat fighting. As a result, the terriers stopped being fighting dogs and began to turn into show dogs. It was during this period that terrier breeders were divided into hunting and decorative. The first differed large sizes, the second, respectively - miniature. Officially, the work on the new two breeds began in 1920, and the name English Toy Terrier has been officially established since 1962. Prior to this dog called black and tan terrier.

A huge number of terriers of both species were transported to North America. The breed developed not only separately from the European representatives of the breed, but also separately from each other. This situation has led to a significant decrease in the population. Cynologists were forced to combine both branches of the breed, to prevent complete extinction. Terriers simply began to be divided into two varieties. All of these actions have led to tremendous confusion. Many simply did not understand this one breed or two, confused in the names.

To date, officially - these are two different breeds with their own separate standards.
